R.I.P. Daveigh Chase: The avenger from „The Ring“

A terrible revenge for a terrible life: Samara, an orphaned girl, is strangled by her mentally ill adoptive mother and then thrown into a dried-up well. Still alive, she perished in the muddy depths. But even in death she finds no peace. As an undead spirit, she murders anyone who plays a mysterious video that alludes to her death. With slow, deliberate steps, dripping hair and a face contorted with rage, she approaches her victim.

Even for those who rate the US remake of THE RING (2002) lower than the Japanese original, the performance of the then 12-year-old Daveigh Chase as Samara remains unforgettable. A success she was able to repeat in the sequel, THE RING 2 (2005).

Daveigh Chase had actually made her breakthrough a year before THE RING, playing the younger sister of the title character in DONNY DARKO (2001). Despite these successes, she did not limit herself to the horror genre. She was the original voice of Lilo in the Disney film LILO & STITCH. On 16 June, Daveigh Chase passed away at the age of 35.

The films mentioned above are available to hire on DVD from the Filmkunst video library: THE RING (I and II), DONNIE DARKO and LILO & STITCH.
