May 8, 2025: 80 years of liberation from Nazi terror
On May 8, 1945, the German armed forces declared their unconditional surrender. This marked the end of the Second World War. But not only the war. The extermination of Jews, Sinti, Roma and homosexuals, the entire Nazi hell machine was also stopped. This happened 80 years ago. The Filmkunst-Videothek is making a selection of rental DVDs available to mark the occasion. For example:
DIE FOTOGRAFIN (2003): A biopic about Lee Miller (1907-77). The early surrealist muse accompanied the Allied troops as a photojournalist. A picture of her in Hitler’s bathtub in 1945 became world-famous. Lee Miller is played by British megastar Kate Winslet.
THE MURDERERS ARE AMONG US (1946): The first German post-war film, shot by DEFA director Wolfgang Staudte in shattered Berlin. A concentration camp survivor (Hildegard Knef) and a former military surgeon meet a war criminal who has since regained success and prosperity. The surgeon plans an act of revenge…
DEUTSCHLAND IM JAHRE NULL (1948): Neorealist and Nouvelle Vague icon Roberto Rosselini tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy in post-war Berlin. In the rubble, he struggles to survive on a daily basis – until he meets the teacher Enning, an unbroken Nazi ideologue and supplier to a paedophile ring. The catastrophe takes its course.
LOLA (2022): London in 1940, two sisters create a radio system that receives messages from the future. Both send this information to the British government. In doing so, however, they change the course of history. Suddenly, the time machine receives images showing Nazi Germany as the victor of the Second World War. Can this horror still be averted?
